'Green Transportation—Sustainability is a Round-Trip Ticket,' was the theme of the Ninth Annual Eco-Fair, held 5-7 June, at Maharishi University of Management (M.U.M.) in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Established in 2001, the Eco-Fair educates people about all aspects of sustainability. More than 450 students, administrators, community members, and out of town guests attended this year's event.
Fairfield Mayor Ed Malloy, named by MSN.com as one of the nation's 15 'greenest' mayors, opened the weekend by discussing Fairfield's plan to be a model for energy independence and sustainable living.
Attendees enjoyed educational films, eco-vendors, live entertainment, and a fashion show of organic and recycled clothing. Special workshops were held on topics such as electric bike conversion, bio-diesel making, and the proper technique of walking for exercise and transportation.
MUM has been integrating sustainability in every aspect of its operation and new construction. The Sustainable Living Center, which will be the 'ultimate green building' when completed this fall, will house the Sustainable Living programme, one of the most popular undergraduate degrees offered at the university in its Consciousness-Based Education programmes.
