At Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, award-winning filmmaker Dr David Lynch recently spoke to several hundred students from across the United States attending a special conference entitled, 'Exploring the Frontiers of Creativity, Sustainability, and Peace'. Joining Dr Lynch at the weekend conference were quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin*, renowned singer-songwriter Donovan Leitch, and a star lineup of other musicians, including recording artists Moby and Chrysta Bell.
Dr Lynch's talk consisted of answering questions from students, such as, 'What is the potential for human creativity?' 'What is the source of creativity'?
'Creativity seems to be about solutions, ideas, thrilling ideas,' said Dr Lynch. 'It feeds the work of an artist. It's intuition. I say it's the number one tool of an artist. Intuition is a knowingness. Intuition tells you when something isn't quite right and it tells you how to make it right. You've got these problems and you get an idea, and boom! There's the answer, and that's creativity'.
A question arose from the audience about the role of stress or negativity in the creative process. Dr Lynch answered, 'It seems like negativity blocks creativity. So if you are really stressed, really depressed or angry there is very little room for the flow of ideas. When you transcend [during Transcendental Meditation] the physiology is settling down and you get this rest that is three times deeper than the deepest sleep. So I picture barbed wire — like stresses that are really locked into us, getting a chance to disolve. Negativity begins to recede. And that is a heavy weight lifting so that the conduit of creativity can open and ideas can flow.'
Following Dr Lynch's talk was an engaging presentation by Dr John Hagelin, describing the latest breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and sociological research. Dr Hagelin explained the discovery in physics of the Unified Field, and elaborated on the application of the technology of the unified field—the Transcendental Meditation Programme—to create world peace and usher in a new wave of 'global citizenship' to eradicate sociological problems that would otherwise be intractable.
* World renowned quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin is Raja of Invincible America, and Minister of Science and Technology of the Global Country of World Peace.
