February 1 grand opening celebration for Student Center
The M.U.M. Review Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA Translate This Article
21 January 2008
The long-anticipated grand opening for the Argiro Student Center will begin at 11:00 a.m. on February 1 and will feature speeches by University officials, Trustee Dr. Vincent Argiro and Dr. Maggie Argiro, and Student Government officers.
Use of the building will commence following the celebration, with the new dining facility being used for dinner on that day. In the near future, there will be a public open house for the entire community.
The $7.3 million, 50,000-square-foot Student Center features two dining halls, banquet room, café, lounge, 300-seat auditorium, bookstore, mailroom, and offices for Student Services, Global Student Council, and other student-related activities. The structure includes two stories, as well as a 'garden-level' floor.
The building's elegant design includes golden marble, golden maple, and chandeliered entry lobby with its vaulted ceilings almost three stories high, as well as a large, stained glass window.
The building is named for Vincent and Maggie Argiro, who generously supported its construction. 'We are so delighted to be able to contribute to this great accomplishment of the community of Maharishi University of Management,' they wrote in an e-mail. 'This building is the stuff of dreams—dreams fulfilled, dreams in progress, dreams yet to be born within its life-giving walls.'
The building is constructed according to principles of Maharishi Vedic (SM) architecture, which supports the health, well-being, clarity, and success of the occupants. These principles include the proportions and orientation, the slope of the land, a cupola crowning the roof, and a central Brahmasthan, or open area.
The main and second floors of the Student Center are expected to be complete by the opening on February 1, but the 'garden-level' floor may still have work to be done, said Chief Administrative Officer David Streid. The areas that may not be finished include the mail room, recreation room, classroom, and the exercise and dance studio.
The auditorium is expected to be done and to be used for Forest Academy* classes starting on Monday, February 4.
The University Trustees have been invited to attend the grand opening.
