Dr Ashley Deans, Director of Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, visited several European countries in recent months, including England, Scotland, and Wales, to present Consciousness-Based Education to educators.

United Kingdom

Dr Deans reported a 'warm response' during meetings with Members of Parliament in London, and went on to speak at the nation's leading institute of higher learning, Cambridge University. Dr Deans was pleased to inform the audience that Dr Bevan Morris was a graduate of Gonville and Caius College where the meeting was held. This information, Dr Dean said, 'really woke the audience up'. At the end, an eminent professor and Fellow of the Royal Society (Britain's most prestigious scientific institution) expressed embarrassment that he knew so little about scientific research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme and was enthusiastic to learn more.

Well-attended meetings were also held in London at the Institute of Education, in Manchester, and in Cardiff, with participants eager to introduce Consciousness-Based Education in their schools and colleges. Dr Deans also spoke at a distinguished private school, where the Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religion showed great interest, stating that 'we need silence in our curriculum'. In each location, Dr Deans was inspired by the 'total openness' of audiences to Consciousness-Based Education, and their lively interest in the vast body of scientific research demonstrating that this approach can develop the full creative potential of students.

Dr Deans then travelled on to Switzerland, meeting with participants of a World Peace Assembly at the beautiful facilities of the Global Country of World Peace in Seelisberg, in the mountains overlooking Lake Lucerne, where Maharishi Mahesh Yogi brought to light many great advances in the knowledge and programmes of consciousness in the 1970's and 80's. Dr Deans then met a group of teachers at an international school in Buchs, near the border with Liechtenstein, at the invitation of the principal. There is great confidence that a programme of Consciousness-Based Education will soon commence in this school.

At a further lecture in Basel, a principal expressed his determination to introduce this programme in his school, stating that he realized that education needed to be totally transformed. In Geneva, at a very well-organized meeting with an excellent turnout, Dr Deans met with leaders from the United Nations, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other organizations, informing them how Maharishi's Consciousness-Based programmes can create an invincible world.

Across the Alps in Italy, Dr Deans spoke at Belluno in the Dolomites, and gave a presentation elsewhere for a school of 200 students which will be the first school in Italy to go ahead with Consciousness-Based Education. Dr Deans found that a great deal of interest had already been generated in Italy by the recent tour of the renowned film director and artist, Dr David Lynch, who has vigorously championed Consciousness-Based Education around the world. In Milan, Dr Deans addressed a large meeting in the city's Arts Centre, where an exhibition of Dr Lynch's paintings is currently on display. At the end of the presentation, a principal immediately announced that he would introduce this knowledge into his school, which met with warm approval from the audience.

Moving again to the eastern Mediterranean, Dr Deans visited Israel, where a series of lectures had been organized by Dr Alex Kutai, National Director of the Global Country of World Peace. Addressing a World Peace Assembly at a beautiful, peaceful location on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, Dr Deans inspired them with the knowledge of how easy it would be to create invincibility for their nation. Course participants resolved to introduce this programme to their local educators. Dr Deans also spoke to residents at the beautiful Maharishi Peace Colony of Hararit and went on to make a presentation at a special dinner in the ancient city of Jerusalem, which stimulated a warm response and lively discussion. Dr Deans then addressed 40 principals of private schools from all over Israel, whose students had special educational needs. The head of this group gave a moving response at the end of the presentation, expressing great interest in what they had learned and observing that, at the beginning of the presentation, he saw a group of stressed faces but now witnessed a great softening in the atmosphere.

In Tel Aviv, there was very big turnout for Dr Deans' lecture, with many school principals attending. In the nearby town of Holon, which calls itself the City of Children, the city's head of education organized a meeting for twenty principals. He was so impressed, and the response so enthusiastic, that he now wants to set up a larger conference.

There was also an excellent response in Haifa, where a large audience enjoyed the presentation in a beautiful hotel, where Dr David Lynch also recently spoke. Dr Deans was able to follow-up a contact between Dr Lynch and the Mayor of Haifa, who had expressed interest in introducing Consciousness-Based Education in a particular school in the city. The principal and director of education at the school were highly receptive to this proposal, recognizing that their school needed an innovative solution to its many problems. The principal of a very significant school with several hundred students also attended, and was so inspired that he returned the following week with some of his teachers. As a result, the principal stated his intention to introduce Consciousness-Based Education in the school. The principal was overjoyed at the prospect of leading the first school to introduce this programme in Israel and become a shining star to create invincibility for the whole nation from his school.
