On 1 July 2007 DeMorgen reported:
Stress-Free Schools are already receiving great acclaim in the United States and in Holland, and soon these schools will also be opened in Belgium as well.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of education.
The article stated that in response to the increasing pressure faced by students and teachers, 'quite a few initiatives have emerged [in education] that examine learning in a different manner...' Stress-Free Schools are one such approach.
DeMorgen reported, 'Stress-Free Schools are simply schools where children can study typical subjects like geography and mathematics in an ordinary classroom, with the usual homework assignments and discipline found in classes everywhere. The only difference is that the students get together twice a day in a big hall to practise Transcendental Meditation for fifteen minutes.'
The article noted that 'According to the headmasters, those fifteen minutes are sufficient to make a big difference. Children are calmer, more alert, and friendlier, and teachers once again enjoy their work. Academic achievements are remarkably better then in many other schools. Even with problem children, Stress-Free Schools are bringing good results. Without using Ritalin or any other drug, they can achieve a real behavioural change in students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) . . .'
'This technique has advantages over others in that it is easy, pleasant, and simple for children who don't like studying or sitting quietly.' The article also cited scientific research that shows Transcendental Meditation, in addition to helping students with ADHD, also reduces stress and anxiety, and lowers blood pressure.
DeMorgen stated that as the first implementation of Stress-Free Schools in Belgium the Committee for Stress-Free Schools has recently purchased land on which to establish a private school offering Transcendental Meditation.
