At Ecobuild, the world's leading event for sustainable design, construction, and the built environment, several ideas about Maharishi Vastu architecture resonated strongly with many members of the public who passed through the Vastu booth at the recent exhibition in London.

Reporting about the experience at Ecobuild, Henry Brighouse, a great exponent of Vastu architecture in the United Kingdom, talked more about these components of Vastu design.

He said, 'When we were discussing the concepts and ideas of Maharishi Vastu with the public, there were a number of ideas that they really related to very strongly.'

The first resonant idea was that of right direction.

'The life-giving rays of the rising sun can bring a positive influence into the home or into the city,' Mr Brighouse said. 'For that we require that the city or the house be aligned to the east to invite the nourishing rays, the life-giving rays of the rising sun into the home.'

One reason visitors to the Vastu booth related to this concept was because, according to Mr Brighouse, 'There is research that shows when we're facing east the brain is firing more coherently.'

Another concept which people related to very strongly was the concept of the Brahmasthan, or central point of silence in a house, development, or city.

Mr Brighouse elaborated, 'Many systems in nature, from galaxies to planets to tiny cells in the body, they all have a silent centre from which everything is organized. Likewise when we're building in harmony with natural law, then we create this silent centre. This is very visible in many ancient cities like Kyoto, Mandalay, and Bangalore. Many ancient cities have the residue of Vedic city planning.'

It was satisfying for the Maharishi Vastu coordinators to find that the general public easily understood and accepted these and other fundamental concepts of Vastu architecture, he said.

'These ideas [Vastu architecture] are increasingly acceptable in the public awareness. We can discuss them very freely with people and we see an immediate sense of recognition when we talk about them. It was such a pleasure to actually get out into the public and start to discuss these ideas with people, and to show that we are actually putting them into practice with real developments, real buildings on the ground.'
