Last weekend's major international conference, 'Building a Healthy, Sustainable American Indian Community', inspired participants and leaders of Indian Country from across North America with a new vision of possibilities for promoting better health, education, and quality of life, and revitalizing ancient cultural traditions. The conference was held at Maharishi University of Management (M.U.M.) in Fairfield, Iowa, USA, from Friday 25 September to Sunday 27 September.

Speaking recently on Maharishi Global Family Chat*, Dr Robert Roth, National Director of Expansion for the Global Country of World Peace in the US, gave an overview of the conference, as well as showing several video clips and slides of the event.

The conference, described by Dr Roth as 'historic', was co-hosted by Raja John Hagelin, Raja of Invincible America for the Global Country of World Peace, and Prosper Waukon, elder of the Winnebago Tribe in Nebraska and Executive Director of American Indian initiatives for the David Lynch Foundation. Also presenting at the event were Robert Cook, leader of American Indian education initiatives throughout the US, and Joe Garcia, President of the National Congress of American Indians and leading advocate for all 600 tribes.

The main purpose of the conference was to explore five key areas of sustainability for American Indian communities, put forth by the Ho-Chunk elders in conjunction with the David Lynch Foundation: education, health, energy, organic agriculture, and cultural integrity. 'Following presentations by leading figures in these areas, Raja Hagelin inspired the audience by tying each point to the broader framework' of the knowledge and programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, commented Dr Roth.

He went on to note several other key events of the conference, including the awarding of an honorary doctorate in Natural Law to STOLCEL (John Elliott), a leader of the WSANEC (Saanich) First Nation in Canada, and the opening address by former US President Bill Clinton, delivered via videotape.

In conclusion, Dr Roth remarked that 'it was wonderful to honour the custodians of Natural Law for the US, and to anchor their cultural values in the pure Vedic Knowledge given to us by Maharishi.'

* Dr Roth's report was featured on the 29 September 2009 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
