MUM, home of inner and outer sustainability, draws organic-minded consumers

Maharishi University of Management is becoming increasingly renowned for its holistic approach to sustainability—from groundbreaking Bachelor of Science and MBA degree programmes in that subject; to the off-the-grid Sustainable Living Center; to the broad scope of University policy that supports sustainable initiatives at every level—including within students' consciousness, through its Consciousness-Based education programme. Even the campus store is no exception, as one of the main purveyors of organic clothing in the city of Fairfield, Iowa.
The University Store is located in the Argiro Student Center, itself a prime example of MUM's approach. The Argiro Center, which opened in 2008, is America's first student center constructed according to the ancient principles of Maharishi Vastu—Vedic architecture for harmony with natural law; it also incorporates advanced green features that will qualify it for LEED certification.
The store draws visitors not only from campus, but from the larger Fairfield community, as well as people who come for courses from around the country, said Dr Harry Bright, Director of Business Enterprise for MUM. Aside from the wide array of organic items, customers have repeatedly commented on the joys of shopping in a Vastu building.
Dr Bright also noted that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme and Maharishi University of Management, recommended eating organic food and wearing organic clothing in order to avoid toxic and harmful ingredients and materials, another factor in the store's growing popularity.
In addition, the store offers an abundance of Maharishi Ayur-Veda natural health products, as well as books, CDs, and DVDs on Maharishi's knowledge and programmes. It has also begun selling special items from Nepal, the proceeds from which will contribute towards supporting a coherence-creating group of Maharishi Vedic Pandits in that country.
