New horizons for creating coherence and harmony in a wide-ranging area

In the region encompassing southeastern Europe to western Asia, reports from several countries indicated progress, laying a foundation to create a peaceful, harmonious influence in society through the Transcendental Meditation programme.
In Pakistan Dr Ashok Kumar, together with his wife, has been very active teaching and promoting Transcendental Meditation, primarily in Karachi and the surrounding area.
Recently a half-hour show dedicated to Transcendental Meditation aired on one of the most-watched television stations in Pakistan. The discussion featured Dr Kumar, director of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's programmes in Pakistan. His talk included information about Transcendental Meditation, Maharishi, and the successes of Maharishi's programmes throughout the world.
Mr Kumar, who also spoke on a second television programme on a different channel, has been successful in bringing Transcendental Meditation to the attention of many people in Pakistan, including a presentation on Consciousness-Based Education at a school.
Further to the west, an ancient city in northern Iraq hosted a Transcendental Meditation teacher from Europe, who taught the first Transcendental Meditation course held in the region for some time.
Another bright spot in the region, Armenia, has long held a special distinction in the family of nations where people practise Transcendental Meditation. It is a country in which 1% of the population has learned Transcendental Meditation over time, and the square root of 1% has learned the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme, including Yogic Flying.*
Dr Robert Wynne, Mayor of Maharishi Vedic City in Iowa, USA, recently returned to Armenia 23 years after his first stay in the country. In 1989-90, Dr Wynne and his wife, Dr Maureen Wynne, were members of a team of faculty from Maharishi University of Management in the USA who were invited to Armenia and held courses in which many thousands of Armenians learned Transcendental Meditation.
During the Wynnes' recent visit they met with many people who practise Transcendental Meditation. From the various gatherings an organizational group was formed who will help make more of Maharishi's programmes available in Armenia. They will focus on areas such as building a website, Maharishi Vastu architecture, and tours of experts from India who teach advanced techniques of Transcendental Meditation.
*In 1960, Maharishi predicted that 1% of a population practising Transcendental Meditation would produce measurable improvements in the quality of life for the whole population. The phenomenon of the Maharishi Effect was first identified by scientists and named in honour of Maharishi in 1974; a paper published in 1981 reported an average reduction in the crime rate in several '1% cities' in the USA. The term was later extended to include the influence of coherence and positivity in society generated by the square root of 1% practising Yogic Flying in a group.
