New Caledonia: Coral Sea paradise is world's largest protected area
7 May 2014 - New Caledonia --a group of islands in the Pacific -- is a French territory that now boasts the title of the world's largest protected area. The newly created Natural Park of the Coral Sea is a region of islands and reefs covering 95 per cent of the territory, which is 3000 kilometres west of Australia. At 1.3 million square kilometres, it is three times the size of Germany. The park is home to 48 species of shark and 25 species of marine mammal. It includes the world's largest lagoon and a coral reef second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef. (more)

Melanesian Spearhead Group plan for peacekeeping
20 June 2013 - Melanesian countries in the Pacific are pushing ahead with a plan to set up a peacekeeping unit to work with the United Nations around the world. The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), comprising leaders of Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia's indigenous political group, the FLNKS, are meeting in Noumea, New Caledonia for two days. New Caledonia: Organic certification scheme bears fruit
12 March 2012 - An organic guarantee and labelling system created under the auspices of the Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community and Secretariat of the Pacific Community has met with success in New Caledonia, with certified organic fruits and vegetables being welcomed by consumers at markets and supermarkets around the territory. New Caledonia gets submarine cable link to Australia
2 September 2008 - A new, high-speed, undersea fiber optic cable network now connects New Caledonia to Australia where it will interconnect with the international routes towards Europe and the United States. The 2,200 kilometer cable, nicknamed 'Gondwana,' was installed earlier this year by French company Alcatel Lucent. (more)
