On 29 September 2010 Embody Magazine reported: Research on a variety of meditation techniques shows that different kinds of meditations produce different kinds of brainwave activity. This information can help medical doctors, who are more and more frequently recommending meditation as a means of stress-management for their patients. It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of science.

'The idea is that meditation is, in a sense, a ''cognitive task'' and EEG frequencies are known for different tasks,' says neuroscientist Dr Fred Travis in the article.

Dr Travis is Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management and co-author of 'a new paper published in Consciousness and Cognition [which] discusses three categories to organize and better understand meditation', the article states.

Practitioners of the first category—focused attention—typically experience beta/gamma brainwave activity; practitioners of the second category—open monitering—experience theta activity; and practitioners of the third category—automatic self-transcending—experience alpha1 brainwave activity.

The article highlights examples of each category including Zen in the first category, Mindfulness in the second, and the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the third category.

'These findings shed light on the common mistake of averaging meditations together to determine mechanisms or clinical effects,' the article states.
