An event in Washington, DC, hosted by the Operation Warrior Wellness branch of the David Lynch Foundation, sought to introduce an alternative, but promising, treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

James Wilson, an Iraq veteran, helped organize the event and draw media attention to the initiative. He himself has found relief through Transcendental Meditation, a simple but profoundly effective stress-management technique that studies have found reduces the symptoms of PTSD by around 50 per cent.

In a six-minute segment on a nightly television news show in the US capital, Mr Wilson spoke with the news anchor about reaching out to other veterans through Transcendental Meditation.

'They have been very receptive,' he said, even more after they learn how to practise the technique. Veterans enjoy the experience of their awareness effortlessly settling down below 'the active levels of their mind that are very stressed', and feeling a level of quiet within and deep rest. Mr Wilson added, 'Insomnia is a big problem as well in the military.'

Mr Wilson then spoke of the upcoming event to benefit veterans, hopefully the first of many.

'It will be informative. Dr Sarina Grosswald [Head of Research for the David Lynch Foundation] will be there presenting new research on PTSD in the military.' Local veterans who practise Transcendental Meditation will give their testimonies on how meditation has helped them. Following the programme of speakers, interested veterans can sign up to be instructed in Transcendental Meditation.

Mario Orsatti, Director of Special Programmes for the David Lynch Foundation, praised Mr Wilson's efforts to help his fellow veterans. He said that PTSD is an issue very much on the minds of the leaders in Washington, DC, and that Mr Wilson was able to inspire a lot of 'buzz' around the event.
