Transcendental Meditation for PTSD
by Lt. Gen. Clarence E. McKnight

16 August 2013
On 18 August 2013 The Huffington Post reported: 'One of the most significant disabilities incurred by U.S. service personnel returning from the battle zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, whether or not they suffered physical injuries, is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),' writes Lt. Gen. Clarence E. McKnight, Jr. (U.S. Army, Ret.). 'But many victims of PTSD are today finding relief from an unexpected source—Transcendental Meditation (TM)—a proven technique for enabling people to deal with mental and emotional stress that has survived extensive scientific review over the years.' It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring fulfilment to the field of defence.
'Speaking as one who has been to war and seen its horrors, I see PTSD as a natural reaction to the inhuman conditions of the battlefield,' Lt. Gen. McKnight says in the article, noting the challenges faced by veterans suffering from PTSD, and by health professionals seeking to treat them.
Lt. Gen. McKnight, former head of the Signal Corps, has 'first-hand knowledge of the power of TM', having practiced the technique for over 40 years, starting in 1971 at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. 'TM is most assuredly NOT a religion,' he writes, 'rather it is a technique for taking you down mentally to ground zero, clearing your mind of stress and frustration as you find peace within yourself and equanimity of spirit.'
