After giving a presentations in India and Nepal, Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, went on to Greece, concluding the first stage of his Total Health World Tour. Dr Schneider is Director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention and Dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health at Maharishi University of Management in the USA.
At the University of Athens medical school there is a postgraduate programme in stress management and health promotion in which physicians and advanced medical students learn about mind-body medicine. Dr Schneider, who lectured in this programme several years ago, was invited to return this year as a visiting professor.
He spoke about how Maharishi Ayur-Veda and Transcendental Meditation can reduce individual and collective stress and improve health.
In 2009 Dr Schneider and renowned quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin* participated in a three-day series of extended lectures in this year-long course. They spoke about Maharishi Ayur-Veda as a complete system of natural health care, Transcendental Meditation as a practice to create good health, and the integration of the two to prevent disease and promote health for the individual and the environment.
In related news, last year 23 women in this postgraduate programme learned Transcendental Meditation after studying some of the large body of scientific research showing the technique to be a very effective approach for stress reduction, both for individuals and the whole society.
Commenting recently on his visit, Dr Schneider paid tribute to Greece as the source of Western medicine, from Hippocrates and the ancient Greek scholars.
He also noted parallels between principles described by Hippocrates and those of Maharishi Ayur-Veda. As he has seen in countries around the world, there was great interest among scientists and health professionals to learn more about the modern scientific approach of Maharishi Ayur-Veda and relate it to the knowledge from their own ancient medical traditions—integrating ancient and modern systems of medicine to bring ideal health to the people of the nation.
