A new video which serves as a general introduction to the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the UK focuses on the health benefits of practising the technique as well as the scientific research that documents them.

The video interviews people from all areas of life, including many busy professionals. Featured in the interviews is Dr Donn Brennan, a General Practitioner who consults and lectures extensively on health aspects of Transcendental Meditation in Ireland and all over the British Isles.

Dr Brennan commented on the physiological effects of practising Transcendental Meditation (TM).

The research on TM shows effects 'exactly opposite to what happens in our bodies when we're stressed', he said.

When we are stressed, he continued, 'it's the overactive system of stress that has worn our reserves and then leaves us pressurized. Wherever we're vulnerable, the stress will manifest, whether it's a skin disease, whether it's hypertension, whether it's a migraine, whether it's insomnia. But by regularly integrating, twice a day, a level of profound rest . . . . the experience is so refreshing and energizing, it's profoundly reintegrating in a very natural, simple, healthy manner.'

The video also mentions the over 600 scientific studies which have been conducted on Transcendental Meditation by 250 independent institutions in 33 countries. Studies have been published in over 100 of the world's leading scientific journals.

According to the video, studies have found that during Transcendental Meditation 'remarkable changes' take place. The brain becomes highly orderly and coherent in its activity. Breathing and heart rate become slower and more refined, an effect which most people notice even the first time they practise Transcendental Meditation.

In addition, during Transcendental Meditation the levels of hormones and chemicals in the body which are indicators of stress, such as blood lactate and cortisol, are significantly reduced. Muscle systems in various parts of the body, such as shoulders, relax spontaneously.

The narrator of the video remarks, 'As a result of this profound state of deep rest, the body's natural self-repair mechanisms are fully activated, enabling deeply rooted stress, tension, and fatigue to be eliminated.'
