Transcendental Meditation: Initiative launched to help 10,000 war veterans overcome traumatic stress

21 December 2010
With new initiatives such as 'Operation Warrior Wellness', the David Lynch Foundation presents the Transcendental Meditation Programme as a means to alleviate some of the most difficult societal and health problems facing the world today.
The goal of Operation Warrior Wellness, which was launched on 13 December 2010, is to offer instruction in Transcendental Meditation to 10,000 US veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars who are suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The technique will also be made available to their families. Up to 30 per cent of war veterans today suffer from the disorder, and as a result the initiative is drawing much attention from philanthropic, academic, and medical communities.
Recent research on veterans of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan shows dramatic reductions in the symptoms of PTSD, soon after they began twice-daily practice of Transcendental Meditation, as described recently by Sarina Grosswald, EdD at a December conference in New York City.
In addition to Warrior Wellness, the Foundation is launching renewed efforts in bringing Transcendental Meditation to homeless people, indigenous peoples of the US and Canada, and other areas of society.
An especially strong positive response to these initiatives was achieved at the 13 December 2010 Change Begins Within benefit event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. This event included presentations by renowned figures such as Dr Mehmet Oz, Russell Brand, and Clint Eastwood on the benefits of Transcendental Meditation for veterans with PTSD, and other at-risk groups that are the focus of programmes of the David Lynch Foundation. The 600 distinguished guests at the event were deeply impressed with the scientifically documented ability of this simple meditation technique to help solve intractable problems.
Renowned filmmaker David Lynch has expressed that his organization is deeply committed to solving the longest-standing issues facing the world, by introducing the uniquely effective technique of Transcendental Meditation.
