Several faculty of the Maharishi Aromatherapy Consultants training course held 15-30 May in Provence, France, recently presented* knowledge featured in this breakthrough programme, including the diverse uses of essential oils and their relation to Maharishi Ayur-Veda health care.

Dr Walter Mölk, Deputy Minister of Health for the Global Country of World Peace, and Dr Rosie Geelvink, expert in the field, explained why essential oils are so effective in alleviating various health disorders.

Unlike the other four senses, the odor impulse is transmitted directly to the limbic system of the brain, where emotions, memories, and functions of the autonomic nervous system are stored. 'You could say that the sense of smell bypasses the normal way of sensory experience, which is through the thalamus,' added Dr Mölk.

'This is what makes essential oils so powerful,' continued Dr Geelvink: With its direct transmittal to the limbic system, the scent of the oil has an immediate effect on our psychology and physiology. 'Before we even consciously perceive the fragrance, it has already influenced our emotions, breath rate, digestive process, sleep mechanism, heart rate, etc.'

Dr Mölk went on to elaborate on the different pathways by which essential oils can enter the body, and their subsequent effects. When applied to the skin, the actions and properties of essential oils include antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and the promotion of healing of wounds and burns. When inhaled, the oils have antibacterial properties, and can provide relief from cramps, spasms, and mucus. When ingested orally, essential oils can promote digestive health.

'Maharishi Aromatherapy contributes to the process of enlivening and refining the senses so that one is able to awaken the Self, or Atma, through sensory experience,' explained Dr Mölk in concluding his presentation.

Global Good News will feature additional articles on the presentations by Maharishi Aromatherapy instructors in the coming days.
