Transcendental Meditation: A simple approach to improving health

Four major newspapers in the United Kingdom recently covered the latest scientific research about the beneficial effects of Transcendental Meditation for depression. Please see Part I of this article.
The articles also mentioned other research on the health benefits of Transcendental Meditation, with The Daily Mail saying: 'Last year separate U.S. research found heart attacks, strokes, and deaths fell by 47 per cent in a group using Transcendental Meditation. Experts said the results suggested technique lowers blood pressure by keeping vessels open.'
The Independent article listed several areas of research, including studies showing that meditators have ' ''higher EEG coherence''—indicating greater concentration and alertness.'
The article in The Independent concluded with a reference to the observation made by the authors of one of the new studies, 'that if the benefits of Transcendental Meditation in depression are confirmed, the technique could be of value to millions. One in five elderly people are thought to suffer from depression and half are undiagnosed by their family doctor. Drugs and therapy have a useful but limited effect.'
The article in The Guardian was entitled 'A prescription for meditation: Research shows Transcendental Meditation . . . can be an effective way of fighting depression.' It referred to the advantages of using meditation as a simple and inexpensive approach to coping with depression, and drew attention to the increasing body of evidence that suggests it is also an aid to improving physical health and developing mental potential.
