US Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa recently announced a total of $2,694,251 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for the University of Iowa and Maharishi University of Management to conduct biomedical research.

An announcement from Sen. Harkin's office on 14 September explained that the funding was secured through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Economic Recovery Package. Sen. Harkin chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee that funds National Institutes of Health research, and was able to secure $10.4 billion for medical research across the United States in the ARRA.

'This funding will keep Iowa on the cutting edge of medical research and help lead to the cures of tomorrow,' said Sen. Harkin. 'Research projects like these will move us towards a healthier America and keep people in good-paying jobs in the process.'

These grants were awarded through the NIH, which funds biomedical research and research training at more than 3,000 institutions in the 50 US states and territories.

In addition to several grants awarded to the University of Iowa, Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield was awarded grant funding for a project entitled, 'RCT of Stress Reduction in the Secondary Prevention of CHD in African Americans.'*

* RCT: randomized controlled trial; CHD: coronary heart disease.
