In a recent review of the past year's developments, Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management, described the help and support given to the university through the years by Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa, the home state of MUM in the USA. Senator Harkin, a member of the United States Senate for 28 years, gave the 2013 commencement address at the MUM graduation ceremonies last spring.
'He has come a number of times to visit,' said Dr Morris. The university's focus on organic food, Sustainable Living, and especially its extensive research on heart disease, health, and well-being are very much in line with the senator's own interests and priorities in public policy.
The senator is invested in health, Dr Morris said, adding that Senator Harkin was crucial in expanding funding for heart disease at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Along with several other senators, he helped to nearly double funding in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This division of NIH has granted over $25 million in funding to MUM for research in the last 25 years.*
Senator Harkin was also responsible for the founding of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), another component of NIH. NCCAM states its mission as defining 'through rigorous scientific investigation, the usefulness and safety of complementary and alternative medicine interventions and their roles in improving health and health care.'
Transcendental Meditation is a great example, Dr Morris said, of the type of alternative medicine interventions that are subjected to thorough scientific study by MUM faculty and colleagues, and again and again proven effective. This is one of the reasons for Senator Harkin's support of Maharishi University of Management.
In addition to his speech at the 2013 graduation, Senator Harkin received an honorary doctoral degree, Dr Morris said. He addressed the 334 graduating students, and also inspired trustees, faculty, parents, and the general public.

* Much of this research has been carried out through the MUM Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention, which was established to scientifically investigate time-tested systems of natural health care for the prevention and treatment of major chronic diseases, with an emphasis on cardiovascular health, cancer, and aging in underserved high risk populations.
