Lithuanian PM reportedly resigns
The Associated Press Translate This Article
1 June 2006
VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) - Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas told the president he was resigning Wednesday after his coalition government was left in tatters by the withdrawal of a key partner, the defense minister said.
Defense Minister Gediminas Kirkilas told The Associated Press that Brazauskas informed President Valdas Adamkus of his resignation in a meeting Wednesday. The move came after the Labor Party dropped out of the coalition government amid allegations of corruption.
An official announcement was expected later Wednesday after an emergency Cabinet meeting, Kirkilas said.
Brazauskas, a former Lithuanian communist party leader, was the ex-Soviet republic's first president after regaining independence in 1991. He was appointed prime minister in July 2001 and has led two governments since.
His current Cabinet—the Baltic country's 13th government since independence—was already rickety after another coalition member, New Union, withdrew in April to protest that its leader, Arturas Paulauskas, was ousted from the post of Parliament speaker.
On Wednesday, the Labor Party said it, too, would withdraw its five Cabinet ministers after two of them were accused of misusing public and party funds.

Global Good News comment:
Government is only worthy of the name if it has the ability to prevent problems. In this scientific age a prevention-oriented, problem-free government can be created in every country through the application of the knowledge of total Natural Law, the Constitution of the Universe, which governs the infinite diversity of the ever-expanding universe with perfect order. With the full support of Natural Law every country can enjoy affluence and peace.
Maharishi Peace Governments:
Maharishi Peace Governments are now being established in 108 countries. The Peace Government will not usurp the responsibilities of the existing government, which is primarily concerned with crisis management. Instead, this second, complementary government will bring the life of a nation's people more into accord with Natural Law, thereby preventing crime, improving health, and elevating the destiny of the nation.
