When Maharishi Institute was established in South Africa, it initially offered students the opportunity to take courses in Transcendental Meditation and in knowledge programmes designed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi—the Science of Creative Intelligence and Maharishi's Vedic Science.

Later on, in 2007, explained Dr Taddy Blecher, one of the founders of Maharishi Institute, the opportunity arose to partner with Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in the USA—to offer a degree programme from MUM, one of the flagship institutions for Consciousness-Based Education in the world. Students can enrol in Maharishi Institute to earn a BA degree in Management from MUM.

The great value of this partnership is that it not only offers students a higher degree in business from an accredited American university, but also that the degree programme is offered in terms of the holistic Consciousness-Based Education approach.

In the stately nine-storey building which houses the Institute, located centrally within Johannesburg, there is plenty of room to grow and expand. Currently, there are about 400 students, following in the footsteps of the 29 who have just graduated. Plans for the coming year are to be able to accommodate 1,000 students. Students from 11 African countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, are currently enrolled.

During the last year computer labs were set up that now have over 450 computers. As well, a large library, classrooms, a large kitchen, and a game room have been completed to accommodate the increasing number of students.

Of the current student body many want to attend advanced courses in Maharishi's technologies of consciousness, both to accelerate their own personal development and to create coherence in national consciousness through their group practice. About 180 students have taken the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme course.

Dr Blecher and Dr Richard Peycke are pioneers of Consciousness-Based Education in South Africa who founded and developed the Institute, and have dedicated themselves to its success and expansion. Establishing Maharishi Institute in Johannesburg, they said, is the first step in bringing the benefits of Consciousness-Based Education to every province in South Africa so that while receiving an ideal education, children can create peace and harmony for the country.

They also hope to make this model available to educators and students in other African nations. For more information about Maharishi Institute please visit: http://maharishiinstitute.org/the-institute/about-the-institute.
