Cloud computing, a relatively new technology, is becoming commonplace in the world of computer science. For this reason, professors in the Computer Science department at Maharishi University of Management are now devoting seminars and classes to the subject.
But just what is cloud computing?
Dr Keith Levi, Chair of the Department of Computer Science, explained.
He said that the cloud is interesting in several ways. 'On the one hand, it's really nothing new,' he said, but we are hearing about it more and more in the media and in popular literature.
But in reality the cloud is just the Internet and, as such, has been around 'forever' in computer science terms—'which means about 15 years or so'.
'It just means that more and more . . . is being done over the Internet and now, instead of saving all your data on your computer . . . there are websites that are going to save your data for you.'
This is one of the main features of the cloud: 'All your services are coming over the Internet'—and the aspect of the cloud that the average person will interact with.
But cloud computing is also a feature that technology companies are really starting to utilize.
Dr Levi explained, 'Companies like Google and Microsoft and others are now having a lot of computing resources, meaning computers and server farms, that are available. [This means that] companies, instead of having to have large numbers of computers themselves and maintaining all those, get their computing resources over the Internet and through the cloud.'
This is one reason why it is so important to teach this subject, Dr Levi said.
'The technology just moves very quickly. . . . This is one of the things we're teaching now because it is important to keep up with these [developments]. It's very much a coming technology, something we'll be working with and everyone will be using.'*
