After seeing the success and increasing interest in its undergraduate degree in Media and Communications, Maharishi University of Management in Iowa, USA, is launching a master's programme in that subject.
Professors Gurdy Leete and Stuart Tanner recently spoke about the unique features of the M.A. degree in Media and Communications and how it got started.
According to Professor Tanner, an award-winning filmmaker who has made documentaries for the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and the BBC, the undergraduate degree has four tracks: filmmaking, music, professional and creative writing, and web design. The programme offers quite a range of courses.
'What we have found over the course of the four or five years that we've been offering it,' said Professor Tanner, 'is that the graduates are very sought-after . . . and find good positions.'
It was this success that prompted the new master's programme. 'This has inspired us to launch an M.A., so that those students who are here already can go on and add a master's degree, and M.A.-standard portfolio, to their résumé. It's really about producing work that is of a very high professional standard. . . . We expect quite a few of them to cover some of the extraordinary things that are happening in the world right now.'
Professor Leete added, 'We are really excited about this new programme. We have been teaching digital media here for 20 years.'
The one-year master's programme will launch in August 2013, he said. It requires a bachelor's degree, some prior expertise in video production and editing, and a portfolio. As everything is digital, prospective students need to be able to operate a camera and be comfortable with computers.
Professor Leete explained that the new M.A. is 'for students who have some facility with filmmaking and are ready to go much, much further'.
