A tour of the recently opened Sustainable Living Center at Maharishi University of Management allowed those curious about architecture and sustainability to talk with an expert in those fields.
Jon Lipman, chief architect of the building and expert in Maharishi Vastu design, answered questions from visitors to the nearly 100% sustainable centre. The questions ranged in topic from strictly eco-friendly design principles to Vastu design elements, with many focusing on the unique task Mr Lipman had of balancing both in one building, the Sustainable Living Center.
Light plays a great role in each design philosophy, from the east-facing Vastu buildings that aim to bathe in the nourishing light of sunrise, to the prominence of south-facing windows in sustainable design that are crucial to daylighting without causing solar heat gain. Because of light's importance, Mr Lipman answered many questions on the topic during his tour of the newest building at Maharishi University of Management.
One audience member wondered what the benefit of east light is.
'It is ideal to get light into a building from all directions,' Mr Lipman answered. 'But there's a particular benefit to east light. That benefit occurs around sunrise. So what is particularly important in a building is not to block the early morning sunlight.'
He added that the proposed east verandas on the building, designed to block the strong midafternoon sun, will not obstruct the early morning sunlight.
When asked about which directions provide the best light for daylighting a building, Mr Lipman answered, 'For daylighting a building, the most valuable light is south light, but so, paradoxically, is north light. North light is highly valued because it is even light. So to daylight a building, it is ideal to have as much north and south light as possible.'
