A recent meeting to introduce local parents to the proposed Maharishi Free School in Maharishi Free School in London was crowded with people who wanted to learn more.
'We put out 100 chairs and 150 people came,' commented Dr Peter Warburton, Chairman of Maharishi Foundation UK.
The meeting was very constructive and the response was very positive, he reported, adding that by February, the school needs to have enough parents who indicate that Maharishi Free School is their first choice for their children.
He added, 'So far we have almost 100. One hundred is the minimum to put in the application,' and organizers feel the process is going well in drawing children of the right age in a sufficient number.
The meeting lasted for two hours and included and a question-and-answer session and also a positive endorsement from Erinna Delaney, a mother of two children who are both attending the original Maharishi School in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, which began the current school year as one of the first Free Schools in the nation.
Ms Delaney said that her young children were quite a handful and could be very difficult to manage. They used to come home from school unhappy or crying and didn't want to do their homework. She felt that she was at her wit's end.
Then she saw an advertisement that Maharishi School was going to open as a free school in Skelmersdale. She thought she should give it a try, so she enrolled both kids in the school.
They learned Transcendental Meditation (part of the Consciousness-Based Education curriculum at Maharishi School) and she learned as well. She said this triggered some large changes.
The children come home from school and they're so happy, they often thank her for sending them to this new school. She said because she's learned Transcendental Meditation as well, it's completely transformed the quality of family life.
Ms Delaney concluded, 'As a teacher myself for more than 15 years in both private- and state-funded schools, many of which have excellent staff and facilities, I have found the Maharishi School to offer all-round high quality education. Since my two children have attended the Maharishi School not only their lives, but those of the family as a whole, have become increasingly fulfilled and creative.'
