In a recent article in the Richmond and Twickenham Times (England), the project to open a Maharishi Free School in that area was discussed. The article was titled 'Meditation school gets warm welcome'.

The article began, 'The Council's education chief is pleased the Maharishi School Trust is looking to establish a new Free School teaching meditation techniques in the borough.'

Commenting on the article, Dr Peter Warburton, Chairman of Maharishi Foundation UK, noted that this positive statement was quoted from the local Council in Richmond and the education chief there, not from the Maharishi School Trust.

The article mentioned where the new school would likely be situated and noted that it would be for children age 4-18 and, if approved, would open in 2013.

The article reported on the explanation of Derek Cassells, head teacher of Maharishi Free School in Lancashire, that the students would have weekly classes in 'the Science of Creative Intelligence, a subject with 16 core principles, including ''The nature of life is to grow'' and ''Life is found in layers''.'

The article quoted Mr Cassells as saying, 'The principal understanding for the school is that it is the balance of the nervous system, the brain, and the body that unfolds the creativity and intelligence of the students.'

The article ends with a positive quote from one of the Richmond Councillors:

'The Council is working with the Maharishi School Trust and other proposals for Free Schools to understand their plans for providing much needed additional school places. There is no obligation for Free School proposals to work with us, but we are very pleased that the Maharishi Trust has chosen to do so. We are pleased that they wish to see themselves established within the local family of schools so that our residents continue to get the best joined-up local services. We look forward to seeing the final proposals as they are developed.'

Dr Warburton concluded, 'This shows how welcome the Maharishi School proposals are, not just by the local people, the parents, but also by the local authorities.'

Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Warburton's report on Maharishi Free Schools in the UK.
