Maharishi University of Management professor Dr Bruce Lester recently received an award for his paper on parallel programming, a challenge in the field of computer technology now that computer processors have multiple cores. He presents a solution through 'operator fusion'.
'In data parallel programming there's a large collection of individual data items [such as the two million pixels in a high definition photo] . . . . The processor is then instructed to perform the same operation in parallel on all the individual items of the collection,' Dr Lester explained.
'A typical computer programme might contain thousands or millions of such individual data parallel operations. In ordinary implementation of these data parallel operations, the cores must pause to synchronize with each other after each data parallel operation. This time-consuming synchronization of the cores slows down the whole programme significantly. . . .
'The time for the synchronization increases as the number of cores increases. So this is a serious problem in data parallel programming.
'In my paper I present a technique called ''operator fusion'' to eliminate the synchronization of the multiple cores and thereby speed up the computer programme.
'Some benchmark tests that I describe in the paper show that operator fusion can speed up programme execution by as much as 80 per cent.'*
In the coming days, Global Good News will continue to feature Dr Lester's discussion of parallel programming.
