Dr Guy-Paul Gagné recently toured Canada, meeting with educators about new research on brain function. Dr Gagné is an expert in the Brain Integration Scale and its application in the field of education. The Brain Integration Scale was developed by Fred Travis, PhD, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management, USA.
Please see previous articles in this series, Part I and Part II.
A DVD presentation developed by Dr Gagné details research conducted by Dr Travis at American University in Washington, DC.* One control group of students began practising the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Technique, and after three months they scored significantly higher on the Brain Integration Scale than the non-meditating control group. In fact, the students not practising TM scored lower than they had three months earlier. Says Dr Gagné, 'This shows that typical college education and lifestyle damages brain function.'
What are the advantages of brain integration in real life? In the American University study, those with higher Brain Integration scores had greater capacity to deal with stressful stimuli. 'Students who are able to deal with stress properly have better performance,' explains Dr Gagné.
In the coming days, Global Good News will feature the conclusion of Dr Gagné's presentation, with related research on the Brain Integration scale and world-class Norwegian athletes.
