'Any existing city or town can, in a systematic and practical manner, be reconstructed in four stages,' said Dr Eike Hartmann, an international expert in Maharishi Vastu architecture and city planning. He spoke via a video presentation at the Fourth Annual Vastu Panorama Conference in Bhopal, India.

The theme of the conference was Vastu Dynamics for Global Well-Being, and Dr Hartmann spoke mainly about reconstructing cities around the world using intelligent and natural law-aligned Vastu design.

He outlined a step-by-step, orderly process by which chaotic, incoherent cities can be reconstructed.

'In phase one, we control the expansion of the city by establishing a master plan with parallel roads in east/west and north/south directions. In phase two, we begin the construction of peace colonies and Vastu satellite towns around the city, free from pollution, noise, and stress and set in landscaped gardens.'

The next step involves reconstruction, but as Dr Hartmann was quick to point out, buildings are being levelled and rebuilt all the time. Why not rebuild them according to Vastu architecture instead of using chaotic modern designs?

He said, 'In phase three, we are starting to demolish the congested city centre, replacing it with a beautiful garden Brahmasthan (central area) and central park with flowers and fountains.'

In the final phase, the Vastu city has a number of amenities, including modern communications and transportation systems. In addition, Vastu city planning places emphasis on nontoxic building materials, buildings that are free from pollution and radiation and have sustainable water management, solar panels, and natural heating or cooling.

Dr Hartmann explained, 'The revitalized city will be anciently designed in harmony with natural law but most modernly equipped with state-of-the-art sustainable technologies regarding the basic requirements of water, energy, food, and waste treatment.'
