'Transcending is the experience that is missing from today's lives,' said award-winning film director David Lynch. He was speaking at the recent sold-out benefit gala entitled Change Begins Within, an event in Los Angeles dedicated to raising awareness of the far-reaching benefits of the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
Mr Lynch continued from the first part of his talk ('Water the root and enjoy the fruit'), explaining that transcending is the experience of the deepest level of life.
'It's like an ocean, an ocean of pure, wide awake, unbounded consciousness. And this consciousness within has qualities. It's unbounded intelligence, creativity, happiness known as bliss, love, energy, power, and peace. And it's all positive. There's no negativity in this ocean, just as there's no darkness in the brightest light.'
He then explained that Transcendental Meditation is a mental technique that uses a mantra,* 'which is a very specific vibration'.
'You could look at the mantra as a law of nature, designed to do a specific thing. And this mantra turns the awareness within,' he said. Instead of being pointed always out, the awareness naturally turns within.
'Why is it natural?' Mr Lynch asked. 'Because each deeper level of mind and intellect has more happiness and the happiness is like a magnet, it just pulls us within and at the border of intellect you transcend and you experience that big ocean, that treasury within.'
Every time you experience that treasury, you become more infused with those qualities, he said. This expands consciousness.
Mr Lynch elaborated, 'The side effect of expanding consciousness is negativity begins to recede. Just like in a dark room, if you have a light ready on a dimmer switch and you begin to ramp that light up, darkness starts to go, and when that light is full, there is no darkness.'
Traumatic stress, anxiety, tension, sorrow, depression, hatred, anger, stress, and fears all start to lift away.
Mr Lynch concluded this part of his talk by saying, 'You work in more and more freedom as this heavy negativity lifts.'

* Transcendental Meditation teachers explain that a mantra is a sound whose effects are known to be positive and life-supporting, and which has no meaning associated with it. In the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, the mantra is a vehicle for the conscious mind to transcend—settle inward beyond thought to experience the source of thought, the most silent and peaceful level of consciousness.
