In his newly published bestselling book, Transcendence—Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation, Dr Norman Rosenthal discusses the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the context of leading edge medical thinking. In a recent interview, Dr Rosenthal discussed the introduction and subsequent chapters of his book.
Dr. Norman Rosenthal
In the introduction, award-winning psychiatrist Dr Rosenthal describes his personal story of learning Transcendental Meditation. He characterizes the process as My Journey Back, for two reasons: firstly because he learned and dropped the practice as a young medical student, and was brought back to it decades later by one of his patients. The patient had such good results himself from practising TM that he repeatedly encouraged Dr Rosenthal to start meditating again, that it would make a big difference.
Dr Rosenthal began the practice again, and this brought the realization of the second meaning: '. . . . it has allowed me to enter a place inside my mind that is difficult to describe with any better word than transcendence'—journeying back to the Self.
The book continues with a lively alternation between personal anecdotes and interviews, often with well-known celebrities, and an investigation that is scholarly yet has a light touch, into the effects of Transcendental Meditation in every area related to health. 'The voice is always professional,' comments a reader, even when dealing with harrowing experiences of people who have suffered from traumatic stress. Although the book reads easily, almost like a novel, the reader is always aware that the book represents the work and perspective of an eminent, highly esteemed scientist.
