Celebrating unity in diversity: Message of Maharishi's first historic visit to Austria

The theme of unity in diversity, brought to light by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi during his first visit to Austria nearly 50 years ago, was celebrated in a recent presentation to Teachers and practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation Programme in that country.

The presentation was organized by the Ministry of Religion and Culture of the Global Country of World Peace. Dr Christopher Crowell, global Minister, reported on the presentation,* including the historical background of Maharishi's visit to Austria.

Dr Ann Crowell recently travelled to Austria along with other leaders, including the Raj Rajeshwari** of Austria, and spoke to Teachers, Yogic Flyers, and Meditators who had gathered to create an influence coherence and invincibility in the nation through participation in a World Peace Assembly.

She discussed with assembly participants how diversity blossoms on the basis of enlivening the unity of Transcendental Consciousness that one experiences through Transcendental Meditation.

This experience allows the growth of personal enlightenment, national invincibility, and world peace.

In 1962, Dr Crowell continued, Maharishi held a course in Austria attended by 500 Meditators from 18 countries, with the intention to train a new generation of leadership. Maharishi especially wanted these leaders to be able to give lectures introducing the public to his knowledge and programmes for the fulfilment of every area of life.

The course offered by Maharishi involved deep experience and expanded knowledge of his programmes. It was an early seed of Maharishi's Global Country of World Peace, Dr Crowell explained.

Maharishi presented the very core of his understanding of how unity will blossom in society based on each individual's growing experience of bliss through the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Dr Crowell quoted from Maharishi's address to the assembly about unity in diversity: 'We are here from 18 different countries, belonging to different ways of life, different manners of living, different habits of behaviour, but all are experiencing the same happiness. This is because the same spiritual unity is pervading everywhere—that bliss consciousness which is one and the same for everyone.'

Maharishi explained that while differences remain on the surface level of different countries and different religions, there is an underlying level of unity that can be experienced by anyone, Dr Crowell said.

Dr Crowell highlighted more from Maharishi's 1962 address: 'Maybe we have differences among ourselves, but we have the same thing: absolute bliss consciousness. Absolute bliss consciousness belongs to the depths of everyone's hearts.'
