'It's changed the whole culture for us': The Dr Oz Show's production team on Transcendental Meditation at work

5 July 2013
A group of senior producers of the Emmy Award-winning The Dr. Oz Show are sitting in a conference room. Is this a high-powered staff meeting, driven by the demands and deadlines of a fast-paced television production schedule?
No—though many would say that this daily conference contributes as much to the show's success.
The staff are all sitting quietly with their eyes closed, practicing Transcendental Meditation. Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, last year offered instruction in Transcendental Meditation to his entire production team—as well as time to practise it, 20 minutes twice a day, at work.
''Learning this at work, I think the whole idea is just brilliant,'' said Susan Wagner, Supervising Producer of Medical on the show. ''It's a great thing to share with people you work with.''
''I had been trying to learn to meditate for a long time. . . . I'm a medical producer, I've been doing this for decades. So I was actually familiar with the science underneath meditation. I knew it was of value, I knew that there were a lot of ways to do it—I could just never do it.''
Ms. Wagner commented on the increased calmness she began to feel soon after learning Transcendental Meditation, and its ''enormous benefits workwise.''
''I think that it's made us here really connect as a group,'' said Michele Wasserman, Supervising Producer of Post for The Dr. Oz Show. ''And I think when you feel connected to your coworkers, you work harder; and when you work harder and more efficiently, everybody's happy.''
Field Producer Cathy Daniel has also seen a positive effect of the Transcendental Meditation program on the workplace atmosphere: ''The fact that we're doing it here at work is amazing. It's changed the whole culture for us.''
Global Good News will continue to feature benefits Dr. Oz and his staff have found from practicing Transcendental Meditation.
