25 October 2008
Speaking on 22 October Maharishi Global Family Chat, Dr Peter Swan, Minister of Communication for the Global Country of World Peace and host of the daily programme, outlined the curriculum of the new course on Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture, recently presented for the first time in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The theme of the course is 'The Science and Art of Agreeing with the Culturing Intelligence of Total Natural Law'. The curriculum draws on the profound principles of Maharishi Vedic Science, providing a framework for the knowledge of soil sciences and organic agriculture.
Dr Swan said that the first half of the course is very practical. The first lesson gives an overview of the whole course, and the second lesson describes the transformation of modern agriculture from ploughing to 'zero till'. 'Ploughing has become outdated; many crops are cultivated now just as successfully, if not more so in the longer term, without ploughing,' said Dr Swan.
The third lesson—Soil Science, Part I, which has the theme 'From chemical to biological', covers how the chemical model of agriculture, predominating for the past 50 years, is now outdated, having caused many problems and damage with soil erosion, desertification, and pollution. Dr Swan reported that an area the size of France and Spain together has been turned into desert every year in the world since 1990, the main causes of which are over-grazing and modern agricultural methods.
Global Good News will feature articles on further lessons in the coming days.
