JERUSALEM (AP) - Egypt's new ambassador to Israel has formally assumed his post, saying his country's new Islamist government remains committed to peace with the Jewish state.

Ambassador Atef Salem al-Ahl told Israeli President Shimon Peres on Wednesday that he brings a 'message of peace.'

He said Egypt is 'committed to all the agreements we signed with Israel and we are also committed to the peace treaty with Israel.'

Israel and Egypt signed a historic peace agreement in 1979. But relations have grown tense since longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year, and Islamist Mohammed Morsi was elected in June.

At Wednesday's ceremony, Jordan's new ambassador, Walid Obeidat, also presented his credentials, filling a post that had been vacant for two years despite diplomatic relations between the countries since 1994.
