Neighbour, be conscientious. That's the motto of the campaign the Carabineros de Chile police force is carrying out to reduce the number of firearms in the hands of criminals. There are no statistics regarding the number of registered firearms stolen from households. But it's common for criminals to obtain guns this way, considering how difficult it is to purchase firearms in Chile and the low number of arms smuggled into the Andean nation, Col. Jaime Barría, head of the Department of Firearms and Explosives Control, said. 'Neighbour, be conscientious' involves community leaders, maternity centres, sports clubs, and church leaders whose support has been key to the campaign's success. The collected weapons are destroyed at a foundry annually, almost always in December, in front of members of the press.
