Zanzibar receives $28 million US aid for power project to alleviate electricity outages
30 April 2010 - The United States and Zanzibar signed a $28.1 million aid package on 30 April for financing a power project aimed at alleviating frequent electricity outages in the semi-autonomous islands. The agreement will finance the manufacture and installation of a new 100 megawatt submarine power cable between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, the US embassy said in a statement. (more)

Zanzibar talks boost hopes for peaceful election
25 December 2009 - A rapprochement between Zanzibar's ruling party and the opposition bodes well for a more peaceful election next year on the archipelago where ballots have often turned violent, the President has said. Speaking to Reuters in Stone Town on the sidelines of a democracy conference on Tuesday, President Amani Karume said both sides had joined the talks out of good will and were doing their best to avoid any turmoil at the next election, which is expected at the end of October 2010. Zanzibar to privatize clove industry in revitalization effort
19 July 2007 - Zanzibar will soon privatize its clove industry in a bid to revive what was once the Indian Ocean Islands' main foreign exchange earner, the archipelago's finance minister said on Thursday. Cloves were once the main foreign exchange earner on the so called 'spice islands'. (more)
