Hamilton's Broadway success proves a boon for tiny Caribbean island of Nevis
11 November 2016 - The tiny Caribbean island of Nevis is receiving a boost from an unexpected source: fans of the hit Broadway show Hamilton, who have been drawn to the birthplace of the US founding father. Alexander Hamilton -- who went on to establish the nation's financial system, the Federalist party, and the United States Coast Guard -- was born on Nevis in 1757 and lived in Charlestown until he was eight, when the family moved to the nearby island of St Croix. Saint Kitts and Nevis registers real growth in 2013 with increases in tourism, employment, and wages
8 February 2014 - The Washington-based International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported real growth in the economy of St Kitts and Nevis with increases in tourism and construction, employment and wages for the first half of 2013. The two-island country in the West Indies is moving in the right direction with full confidence and accelerated growth of 2.5 to 3 per cent in 2014. (more)

In Saint Kitts, a boost for small business
5 November 2012 - Entrepreneurs in St Kitts and Nevis will be receiving support from a new source, thanks to a soon-to-launch programme by the St Kitts and Nevis Sugar Industry Diversification Foundation. The Small Entrepreneur and Enterprise Development (SEED) initiative has been designed to help create 'innovative, commercial ventures that have the potential to become profitable,' according to the office of Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas. All nationals with an 'innovative business idea' are being invited to apply. (more)

Taiwan financing for solar-lighting on Saint Kitts
3 October 2012 - Financing for the second phase of the street lighting project -- 120 solar-powered street lights on St. Kitts -- has been handed over to Saint Kitts and Nevis' Prime Minister the Right Honourable Dr Denzil L Douglas by Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), His Excellency Miguel Tsao. The street lights will be installed on the main road leading from Sandy Point through Newton Ground and into St Paul's. (more)

Saint Kitts and Nevis: Organic farming initiative helped by Austrian Embassy
2 July 2012 - Austria's Non-Resident Ambassador to the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Thomas Schuller, has visited the Saddlers Herbal Project, which is financed by the Austrian Embassy. The pilot project in organic farming initiative is experimental and unique on the island. It is currently in the first phase and different medicinal and aromatic plants have been planted on a quarter acre of the farm. Students and at-risk youth are to participate in summer camps in the project to gain traditional knowledge and new techniques with local and tropical medicinal plants. (more)

Caribbean islands struggling to dismantle gangs
22 October 2011 - Things have changed for the worse oi the small islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as many other islands across the Caribbean, where an escalating arms race among criminal gangs has turned once-peaceful neighbourhoods into battle zones. St. Kitts and Nevis, a two-island federation of nearly 50,000 people, has tallied 31 homicides so far in 2011, already making it the bloodiest year on record. Police blame gangs for the escalating violence. Drug traffickers have helped drive up the crime rates by introducing firearms and narcotics with a street value exceeding the size of the Caribbean's legal economy. Experts worry a culture of violence has become entrenched on the islands, where nearly 70 per cent of homicides are committed by firearms. In St. Kitts and Nevis, slayings have increased sixfold since 2002, when there were just five killings. (more)
