Antigua and Barbuda's youth orchestra plays to inspire
7 October 2023 - As far as rehearsals rooms go, it is not ideal. ...The questionable acoustics do little to quell the enthusiasm of the young musicians who comprise Antigua and Barbuda's Youth Symphony Orchestra. Before the orchestra's formation seven years ago, most of these teenagers had never picked up a classical instrument, much less grappled with the tricky compositions of Tchaikovsky. Today they are hard at work practising one of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances ahead of a highly anticipated performance in London later this month alongside the Royal Philharmonic. (more)

Prime Minister Spencer says Antigua's 'Mount Obama' to be national park
28 May 2009 - Antigua plans to do more than just rename its highest peak to honour President Barack Obama. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says his government wants to create Mount Obama Monument and National Park with a new network of hiking trails. He also plans a museum with entertainment and educational facilities. Spencer says Mount Obama will be a 'beacon of hope for all people'. The mountain is currently known as Boggy Peak. (more)

Antigua to rename peak Mount Obama on birthday
20 January 2009 - Antigua plans to give the new US President its 'top' honour on his birthday: renaming its tallest peak Mount Obama. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer says the Caribbean nation will rename Boggy Peak, as it is currently known, on 4 August to mark President Barack Obama's 48th birthday. He first announced the plan in November in a congratulatory letter to Obama but didn't say when it would happen. He revealed the date on Tuesday. (more)

Antigua and Barbuda pays honour with 'Mount Obama'
5 November 2008 - The Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda paid lofty tribute to US President-elect Barack Obama by renaming their highest mountain known as 'Boggy Peak' to 'Mount Obama'. W. Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister wrote in a congratulatory note to the US President-elect, 'Your election will not only transform America, it can transform the world.' (more)
