On his speaking tour of many countries a few years ago, award-winning film director David Lynch answered questions from students and the media about his creative process, his practice of Transcendental Meditation, and his work to create peace in the world.

The tour is the subject of a new documentary by Mr Lynch, 'Meditation, Creativity, Peace', which has been released in different countries over the past several months.

A few questions were aimed directly at Mr Lynch's dedication to the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

At the Idem printing studio in Paris, a reporter said, 'So David, the Maharishi's teaching in your life, how did it all start? Can you tell us the story?'

Mr Lynch answered by drawing a diagramme with a horizontal line bisecting the chart. He explained it as he drew.

'This here represents the surface of life. And we see surfaces . . . . About 300 years ago scientists started wondering what was this wood and what was this metal; what was it really? So they start looking into matter.'

Mr Lynch then drew a vertical line again bisecting the chart into two sides.

'This side is matter and this side is mind,' he said. 'Mind and matter. The scientists discovered molecules, the deeper they went, and they discovered atoms. They thought that was the smallest particle for a long time.'

But, Mr Lynch explained, scientists probed deeper, finding electrons, neutrons, and protons inside those atoms. They kept looking deeper and finding smaller and smaller particles.

'They found four forces. On a deeper level, the four became three and on a deeper level, the three became two, and then about 30 years ago, modern science, quantum physics, discovered the Unified Field, the unity of all the particles and all the forces of matter.'

Mr Lynch explained that this Unified Field is the source of creation.

He said, 'Not only did they discover the Unified Field, but they found that everything that is a thing emerges from this field of no-thing. . . . It is no-thing, but all things come from it.'

Global Good News will feature the second part of this interview, in which Mr Lynch went on to explain how, through Transcendental Meditation, one can directly experience this field of unity, and the positive effects that come from the experience.
