Ask the Experts
Sarina Grosswald, Ed.D., is a research investigator at the NIH-funded Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention. She is a principal investigator in a series of trials studying the effects of Transcendental Meditation on post-traumatic stress (PTS) and resilience among military personnel and veterans.
Q: Is there any research on PTS and the Transcendental Meditation technique?
Dr. Sarina Grosswald: Yes, research on Vietnam veterans with PTS who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique found that they improved by as much as 70 percent in scales related to emotional numbness, anxiety, depression, insomnia, alcohol use, and other stress-related responses, when compared to controls who were receiving standard psychotherapy treatments.
This research, published in Journal of Counseling and Development in 1985, also showed that the TM group improved on measures of family relations and employment.
In addition, a study recently published in the June 2011 issue of Military Medicine replicated these earlier findings but with reference to OEF/OIF veterans suffering from PTS.
The study also found that veterans practicing the TM technique exhibited significant improvements in their overall satisfaction with their quality of life.
