Dr Vyas, an esteemed Vaidya (expert Maharishi Ayur-Veda physician from India) who has been in residence in MERU, Holland for four years, recently gave a fascinating insight into how Agni—the Ayurvedic principle of 'digestive fire'—functions in the physiology.
The Vaidya began by explaining that the human body's strength, glow, enthusiasm, health, and growth all depend on Agni. If Agni is in balanced condition, the body will enjoy a longer, fuller life. If Agni is imbalanced, this ultimately will lead to various health disorders. In fact, said the Vaidya, most disorders seen in Maharishi Ayur-Veda are due to a dullness in Agni.
In order to prevent this dullness of Agni, the digestive system must be treated properly, Dr Vyas said, describing principles of Maharishi Ayur-Veda regarding quantity and type of food, which promote relief from pressure in the digestive and respiratory systems, better sleep, and maintenance of strength.
He also discussed other recommendations* for maintaining balance in Agni, such as adhering to a light and warm diet; regular exercise; and following a proper routine. When these and other principles are not followed, and Agni is weakened, possible results for health can include loss of appetite, acidity and toxicity in the body, digestive and skin disorders, and allergies.
In addition to regulation of physical processes, the proper balance of Agni can lead to improvement in psychological states, such as in alleviation of depression and anxiety, Dr Vyas added.
* In addition to general guidelines such as those given by Vaidya Vyas, consultations are offered at Maharishi Ayur-Veda health centres in many countries (click here for a partial list), through which one can gain specific knowledge and recommendations to enhance health and address particular imbalances in the physiology.
