High-ranking North Korean official visits Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam is in Vietnam for a three-day visit to boost ties between two of the world's few remaining communist countries.

Kim arrived on Sunday and was scheduled to meet with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang and Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong on Monday.

Kim was also expected to meet with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Tuesday before going to Laos.

The Communist Party's Nhan Dan newspaper said in a front page editorial Monday that Kim's visit aims to develop 'traditional friendship' and boost political and economic ties.

North Korea and Vietnam remained close allies until relations began cooling with Hanoi's establishment of relations with South Korea in 1992.
