Fairfield, Iowa, USA (PRWEB) May 14, 2013 — As part of Maharishi University of Management's Distinguished Lecture Series, MUMTV will webcast a presentation on Vedic Organic Agriculture by Dr. A. Thimmaiah, developer of Bhutan National Organic Standards and senior advisor to the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority, Bhutan's Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

The title of Dr Thimmaiah's talk is Feeding Our Future: What We Must Do to Nourish Our Bodies, Our Communities, and Our Planet. His visit is being hosted by the MUM Sustainable Living Department.

Dr. A. Thimmaiah is a respected global expert in organic and Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture. He is a leader in designing and implementing climate-smart agriculture utilizing low-carbon green strategies, and identifying inclusive trade opportunities that benefit the poor.

Dr. Thimmaiah will discuss the value of developing coherent links between Organic/Biodynamic Agriculture and the ancient Indian farming systems mentioned in the Vedas and Upanishads. He will explain how we can produce safe and nutritious food by adopting these concepts and practices.

Dr. A. Thimmaiah holds a PhD in Biodynamic Agriculture from the Indian Institute of Technology and has worked with M.U.M. founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture projects.

Live webcast — May 15 on MUMTV:
The talk will take place Wednesday, May 15, at 8:00p.m. US CDT (Central Daylight Time) in Dalby Hall on the M.U.M. campus. To watch online, visit http://www.mum.edu/mumtv.

M.U.M. President Dr. Bevan Morris invited Dr. Thimmaiah as part of an ongoing cross-pollination of expertise and ideas between the University and Bhutan. Dr. Thimmaiah has been on campus since May 1, sharing his expertise and learning more about M.U.M.'s initiatives in sustainability.

Modern agricultural approaches may increase yields but have also created problems, polluting natural resources and the environment. For that reason Bhutan is moving in the direction of exclusively using organic agriculture. Dr. Thimmaiah is playing a major role as a senior advisor to the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority, a division of Bhutan's Ministry of Agriculture and Forests.

Sustainable organic agriculture, he says, is more in tune with natural law with its deep roots in the Vedas, and can provide a solution to produce safe, nutritious, and bountiful harvests.

Bhutan has a mandate to become 100% organic. Large numbers of farmers are trained in low-cost organic agriculture technologies utilizing locally available resources. ''To support organic farmers,' explains Dr. Thimmaiah, 'the Bhutan Organic Certification System (BOCS) was recently launched. It is a 'zero-cost certification program' where inspection and certification will be provided free of cost to the organic farmers.''

Dr. Thimmaiah is an expert in 'climate-smart agriculture,' which entails adopting low-carbon green technologies. In his research he has developed many low-cost farming solutions. He has advised various international organizations, agri-business corporations, governments, and NGOs in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Italy, Holland, and Costa Rica.

In addition to developing Bhutan's organic standards, he has developed training manuals and other documents that are being used as Bhutan moves toward being 100% organic.
