4 June 2007
On 4 June 2007 Trinidad and Tobago Express reported:
Organic farming is receiving the attention of the government of Trinidad and Tobago as a way to ensure food security.
Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of environment, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.
The Trinidad and Tobago Express quoted Prime Minister Patrick Manning, as saying, 'We are very aware of the worldwide increase in the occurrence of certain diseases like cancer, hypertension, and obesity, scientifically proven as related to the excessive use of certain chemicals in food production. We are therefore placing emphasis on organic farming and are establishing demonstration farms in strategic locations in our country.'
The Prime Minister was speaking at the Caricom Agriculture Donor Conference when he outlined the plan to be undertaken by his government.
The plan consists of the establishment of 10 farms of 100 acres each for large-scale agricultural production.
• Eight would involve participation by the private sector including locally established international companies.
• Two in collaboration with the government of Cuba, which is international renowned for its successful production.
The Prime Minister said, 'The farms will be one of our main strategies to increase food production in this country for both domestic and external markets.'
In addition, 'Manning said 7,000, 2-acre plots will also be allocated to former Caroni Limited workers [a group of sugar industry workers put out of business by the state] for agricultural production.'
The Prime Minister said the focus would be on improving efficiency and infrastructure, including water management, and developing more research and development of unique products.
