Mother tongues taught in New Caledonia

On 1 November 2007 Le Magazine de la Province Sud reported: Telling traditional tales in children's native languages has proved a successful teaching tool in New Caledonia's schools. Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of education, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.

One of six different languages are taught in the schools. This benefits 757 young school children, who are exposed to native speakers of traditional languages.

Fifteen native-speaking teachers of New Caledonia's 'mother tongue' use recorded or written traditional tales as their teaching tools.

The languages being taught are:

• Drehu — Lifu island language

• Nengone — Mare island language

• Xaracuu — Canala-Bouloupari area

• Xaragure — Borindi-Tontouta area

• Numèè — Noumea-Yate area

• Ajie — Houailou area

New Caledonia is an island east of Australia and north of New Zealand.
