On 1 November 2007 Le Magazine de la Province Sud reported: Telling traditional tales in children's native languages has proved a successful teaching tool in New Caledonia's schools. One of six different languages are taught in the schools. This benefits 757 young school children, who are exposed to native speakers of traditional languages.

Fifteen native-speaking teachers of New Caledonia's 'mother tongue' use recorded or written traditional tales as their teaching tools.

The languages being taught are:

• Drehu — Lifu island language

• Nengone — Mare island language

• Xaracuu — Canala-Bouloupari area

• Xaragure — Borindi-Tontouta area

• Numèè — Noumea-Yate area

• Ajie — Houailou area
