The Excellence In Action page of Global Good News is featuring Maharishi University of Management* alumnus Radim Schreiber, who won a top award in the Smithsonian magazine annual photography competition, this time in the Altered Images category for his photo ''Synchronous Fireflies,'' in which he superimposed images of fireflies flashing in synchrony.
Born in the Czech Republic, Mr Schreiber had never seen anything like the phenomenon of fireflies at night. Regarding his vision, he says, ''I believe that fireflies open doors to joy, magic and deep connection with nature. It is my mission to use the latest technology to represent fireflies in the best light possible and, understand and communicate their message to the world. I believe that fireflies have power to connect with various cultures and bring connection and understanding among them.''

Mr. Schreiber used low-light camera technology to take several long exposures over several minutes and merge them together to preserve detail and clarity— ''I do not manipulate any of the firefly photographs. I used standard photography techniques such as basic contrast or color adjustment. The glow is the same glow as camera captured it. I took all the photos of the fireflies on this website in their natural environment, without flash or any other artificial lighting. I believe that this is the only way to preserve its true luminosity and bioluminescent glow.''
He uploaded this photo to The Smithsonian November 2015 and it was selected as Shot Of The Day the next month, followed by Editors' Pick, Finalist, and now Altered Images Winner out of 48,000 submitted photos.
Radim's award-winning firefly images have been featured at CBS, NPR, National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, Iowa Public Television, The Weather Channel, The National Wildlife Federation, and KEW Royal Botanical Gardens.

He says, ''When I walk through a quiet forest in the middle of the night full of fireflies, I have an experience of a magical forest. When I see fireflies being a mere reflection of stars under the Milky Way, I feel connected to everything in the universe. They are communicating to me. I am listening . . . ''
