21 September 2012
Pretoria - Cabinet has called on South Africans to participate in activities that give expression to the theme of Heritage Day celebrations.
Heritage Day will be celebrated nationally on Monday, 24 September.
The main celebratory event will be held in Upington in the Northern Cape province, under the theme 'Celebrating the Heroes and Heroines of the Liberation Struggle in South Africa'. Various provincial events will also be held around the country.
'Cabinet calls on South Africans to participate in activities that give expression to the theme of the day and of Heritage Month,' said acting Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams on Friday.
At its ordinary meeting this week Cabinet approved the hosting of the 40th anniversary celebration of the World Heritage Convention in South Africa from 26 to 28 September.
Taking place around the National Heritage Day, Williams said the conference will afford a unique opportunity to the African state parties to develop an African Strategy and position with regards to world heritage and development.
Various events have been planned for Heritage Month by different sectors across the country to remind and reconnect the nation with its rich and diverse collective liberation heritage.
The Department of Arts and Culture has embarked on a programme to transform the country's heritage to ensure it truly belongs to all who live in it.
The purpose is to use the liberation heritage as a vehicle to foster social cohesion, nation building, economic development, inclusive citizenship and an end to xenophobia and homophobia.
