On 7 July 2012 Themercury.com.au reported: Aboriginal leaders, elders, performers, and sporting stars from around Australia converged on the city of Hobart last night for the national NAIDOC awards. As one of the biggest annual celebrations of indigenous culture. Indigenous leader Tom Calma said it was a night to celebrate the many success stories among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. 'That's a great basis for reconciliation,' said Dr Calma, the former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander justice commissioner. Dr Calma said there was a growing pride and confidence among Aborigines including Tasmanian Aborigines.
